Superintendent Dr. Grayling Tobias, Maureen Moore, Peabody Energy program director, Dr. Brenda Youngblood, HSD Board of Education member, and Dr. Steve Sandbothe, assistant superintendent celebrated with Principal Matt Phillips after he was named a Peabody Energy Leader in Education.
Matthew Phillips, principal, Brown Elementary School of the Hazelwood School District, was named a Peabody Energy Leader in Education for the 2012-13 school year and awarded $1,000 for his compassion and commitment to students.
Phillips was surprised on Thursday afternoon when Maureen Moore, Peabody Energy program director, showed up at Brown Elementary School during a school assembly, with the award. Dr. Brenda Youngblood, HSD Board of Education member, Dr. Grayling Tobias, HSD superintendent, Dr. Steve Sandbothe, assistant superintendent for learning, and Diana Gulotta, assistant superintendent for communications, were also present to help celebrate.
“On behalf of everyone at HSD, we congratulate Matt on this most deserving recognition,” said Tobias. “I support him and his entire team for the great work that they are doing at Brown Elementary. It is our belief and No. 1 priority at HSD that our children can and will succeed, and this is acknowledgement that Matt is making a difference in the lives of his students.”
According a recent Peabody Energy news release, as principal of his school, Phillips fosters a nurturing and collaborative community where everyone is invested in academic excellence. He focuses on teaching students to be respectful and responsible by setting high expectations. He is committed to the success of his students and takes great pride in ensuring that multicultural diversity is celebrated at his school.
“The group totally surprised me in the middle of an assembly,” said Phillips. “However, I am thrilled with receiving this recognition.
“In fact, I appreciate everyone for taking time from their busy schedules to celebrate with me as I received this honor. I would like to thank the Peabody Energy Company and the selection committee for this most prestigious honor and the monetary gift as well,” he said.
“I also want to thank the terrific staff at Brown, who individually could have easily been awarded this honor because of their courageous leadership. Special thanks to our amazing students, who make our jobs of educating them easy,” Phillips said.
The Peabody Energy Leaders in Education program rewards dedicated education professionals from teachers and coaches to librarians and counselors who inspire and motivate youth to succeed. Award recipients are selected throughout the school year by a committee of top educators and business leaders.

Phillips is now a finalist for the Peabody Energy Leaders in Education top honor which will be awarded during a banquet at the Airport Hilton on August 8.
