STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

Career Paths can give all students the academic preparation, guidance, career-related knowledge and flexibility to help them plan studies that are in line with their interests, abilities, and career goals.  The Career Paths framework reinforces the schools' fundamental objectives of academic accountability and improved achievement for all students.

This booklet has been designed to assist students and parents in organizing the student’s educational and career plans.  The Career Path format has been created to assist each student in developing a personalized six-year academic plan.  Students should look at their interests, abilities, talents, and educational/career goals when choosing career pathways and then consider possible careers in each pathway.  The intent is not for students to choose a specific occupation for the rest of their lives, but to explore career opportunities that are associated with each career path.

Hazelwood School District course offerings allow students to focus on careers in

Architecture & Construction

Arts, A/V Technology & Communications

Business Management & Administration

Education and Training

Health Science

Hospitality & Tourism

Human Services

Information Technology

Marketing Sales and Service

 Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics

The use of the Career Paths Handbook will aid students in planning for their futures.  Career paths will help students focus on and provide relevance to their course selections throughout high school.  Each path provides a suggested program of study for entry-level career to careers requiring a baccalaureate degree and beyond.

Research shows that parents have the greatest influence on the career choices of their children.  Developing a career plan with a child is important to his/her future success.  It is very important to realize that any educational and career plan should be reviewed at least once each year as interests, abilities, and options change with increased experience and information.

The district hopes parents and students find this booklet to be a helpful resource in identifying the opportunities that will be most meaningful to each student’s future endeavors.

WHAT ARE CAREER PATHS?

Career paths are clusters of occupations that are grouped because many of the people in them share similar interests and strengths.  All paths include a variety of occupations that require different levels of education and training.  Selecting a career path provides you with an area of focus, along with flexibility and a variety of ideas to pursue.

BENEFITS OF CAREER PATHS FOR STUDENTS

·        Career paths provide a plan for students, regardless of their interests, abilities, talents, or desired levels of education.

·        Career paths will not change the required courses students must take but will allow them to make better use of their elective choices.

·        Career paths allow students to see a relevance to their courses.  Consequently, students are motivated to do better in school.

·        Career paths help parents and other adults provide better assistance to students as they explore careers and select appropriate elective courses during high school.

Students have the opportunity to develop knowledge and skills that will lead to post secondary education or employment in any number of career pathways.

A Note for Parents:

As students move through their high school years, they will make difficult decisions that will affect their educational plans and career goals.  Take the opportunity to be involved in their career planning and support their informed decision-making.

The following activities may help parents guide students through these critical years.

·         Help students learn about themselves -- discuss their strengths, weaknesses, and interests.

·         Discuss educational and career plans annually during registration.

·         Relate high school classes to possible career choices.

·         Talk about your career and how it differs from others careers.

·         Help them gain a variety of work experiences through internships, job shadowing, co-op, and part-time jobs.

·         Understand the high school curriculum.

·         Explore options beyond high school and develop with your student a curriculum that will prepare them for the challenges awaiting them after graduation.

·         Encourage them to talk with other people about careers that are of interest to them.

To the Student:

WHAT STEPS ARE INVOLVED IN MAKING A CAREER PATH DECISION?

Since your future is very important there is no time like the present to start narrowing in on a particular career.

1.  IDENTIFY YOUR INTERESTS, ABILITIES, AND TALENTS

It is important to take a good look at yourself and have a clear understanding of what is important to you.  There are a variety of ways to learn more about yourself.  Examine your activities to identify what kinds of things you enjoy doing.  Review the results of your standardized test scores and examine your grades to identify your strengths.

2.  CONSIDER THE POSSIBLE CAREERS IN EACH CLUSTER

Computer-based programs are available in the Guidance office.  These programs are available to students during the school day, after school, and at other times by appointment.

Students can access the Missouri Connections system through the internet at www.missouriconnections.org.   The features include interests, skills, and work values assessments, a career portfolio, links to job opportunities, postsecondary options, financial aid information, and career development resources.

The guidance department also has a variety of career-related resources for students to check out.

3.  SELECT THE CAREER PATH THAT BEST FITS YOUR INTERESTS AND STRENGTHS.

4.  INVESTIGATE AND DECIDE ON THE EDUCATIONAL PREPARATION NEEDED FOR THE CAREER PATH

Your training or education may come from the military, vocational/technical schools, community colleges, universities, on the job training, apprenticeships, etc.

It is important to understand that you can do some activities now that will assist you in planning your future educational and career endeavors.

The path you have selected is just a starting point!   As you find out more about career paths and occupations in them, you may decide that your strengths are best suited to a different career path

THAT’S HOW CAREER EXPLORATION IS SUPPOSED TO WORK!

SCHOOL -- CONNECTED TO -- CAREERS -- CONNECTED TO --LIFELONG LEARNING

Technological advances and global competition have transformed the nature of work.  Tomorrow’s jobs will require more knowledge, better skills, and more flexible workers than ever before.  Tomorrow’s workers must be prepared to change jobs and careers several times, continually updating their knowledge and skills.

The world of careers has been organized into 16 groupings of occupations called Career Clusters.  The 16 Career Clusters listed below categorize the economy into related occupational and industry areas.

Career Clusters identify pathways from high schools to two- and four-year colleges, technical schools, graduate schools, apprenticeship programs and the workplace so that learners can recognize the relationship between what they learn in school and what they can do in the future.  This connection to future goals motivates students to work harder and enroll in more rigorous courses. *
